Dominik Rastinger, the Senior Political Adviser at the OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek, enrolled in our online Executive Master of Advanced Studies, tells about the programme and what it brings to his career.
Before joining the Executive Master – Master of Advanced Studies in International Law in Armed Conflict programme, I served with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) as part of its Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine. With a decade of experience in political affairs, international relations, and multilateral cooperation – complemented by a Master’s degree in Political Science – I wanted to deepen my expertise in international law. Currently, I serve as the Senior Political Adviser at the OSCE Programme Office in Bishkek, where I apply the knowledge acquired through the programme to practical policy and operational challenges.
My career to date has encompassed roles within governmental bodies, international organizations, think tanks, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector, primarily in policy support, programme management, and coordination. My experience in Ukraine further underscored the intrinsic connection between political science and international law. I looked for a programme that offered a comprehensive exploration of various branches of international law – particularly international humanitarian law – while providing flexibility in terms of location and schedule, which led me to apply for the programme.
What I valued most in learning from the professors was their unique combination of academic excellence and extensive, decades-long professional experience in their respective fields. This blend not only enriched the learning process but also facilitated the practical application of theoretical legal concepts to concrete professional challenges.
As my work requires frequent travel, including to remote locations with limited internet access, having recorded lectures was immensely helpful in managing my schedule effectively. Balancing full-time responsibilities in a multilateral setting across a different time zone alongside the programme was undoubtedly challenging. However, it was a challenge I welcomed, particularly because of the opportunity to engage with fellow students from diverse backgrounds in a dynamic, multicultural learning environment – an aspect of the programme I remember especially fondly.
The programme has not only deepened my knowledge but also had a meaningful impact on my career through the connections I have built along the way. The discussions and debates with professors and fellow students have been intellectually enriching, challenging me to reassess my perspectives on key issues. Moreover, the programme has broadened my outlook on complex topics and enhanced the quality of the analysis and advice I provide to senior management.
